Spooky season: Fall pool concerns
Fall ushers in all sorts of frightening prospects for the local pool owner:
Falling leaves
Pre-winter maintenance
Dropping temperatures
Tuck in for these spooky stories about how fall is coming for your pool and what you can do about it — if you dare.
Night of the Living Dead…Leaves!
It was a dark and stormy night, but some families in the Okanagan had no fear of leaves and debris clogging their pools, thanks to their automatic pool covers.
Down the street, however, the winds blew and whipped up a frenzy in a neighbour's yard. The large sugar maple trees trembled, and their noble leaves shrivelled, dried, and fell to the earth.
That’s when something unnatural started happening — the leaves were moving. The family watched out of their window in horror as the dead leaves came to life and started marching toward their pool!
That’s when they realised the unthinkable: they had forgotten to close their automatic pool cover.
The family was frozen in fear as they watched the dried dead leaves crawling towards the pool, hell-bent on jumping in and soiling the crystal-clear waters.
Suddenly, the automatic pool cover whirred and kicked into gear, lurching forward to cover the pool.
The leaves pounded on the cover and wailed as they realised they couldn’t dirty the pool.
The family rushed to see who had saved the day by closing the cover, but when they reached the switch, no one was there…
The takeaway:
One of the main benefits of an automatic pool cover is its ability to keep dirt, leaves, and other debris from entering your pool at the flip of a switch or press of a button. As for who flipped the switch to save this family’s pool from the army of dead leaves? We may never know.
The Iceman Cometh
It was an ordinary day like any other in the sunny Okanagan Valley. Temperatures were warm and pleasant, and though winter would be here soon, for now, families were still enjoying the sunshine — or so they thought.
An icy presence lurked in the shadows, waiting to strike. One day, after the sun went down, the frosty being headed out into the night, blowing its frosty air through the yards of the townsfolk.
While many families in the neighbourhood shrieked in fear at the energy wasted when their pool temperatures fluctuated and scrambled to prepare their pools to be closed for winter, those who invested in automatic pool covers sighed with relief.
The peace of mind, ease of maintenance, and energy savings the autocover families had drove the icy fiend wild.
The frosty menace blew and blew and huffed and puffed, trying to get the automatic pool cover families upset, but they wouldn’t budge.
Finally, without the power of frantic families scrambling for winter, the iceman vaporized into the atmosphere, never to be seen again.
The takeaway:
As simple as throwing the lid on a Tupperware, an automatic pool cover seals your pool up tightly, providing so many benefits:
Less water evaporation
Reduced energy use
Reduced chemical use
Reduced maintenance and cleaning time
On top of the energy, maintenance, and chemical savings, a quality automatic pool cover like those supplied and installed by Pool Patrol can double as a winter pool cover, provided it is properly set up.

The Tale of the Flying Pumpkin
Halloween had always been a favourite for the Smith family. The kids’ costumes, the kids’ candy…eating the kids’ candy when they came back from trick or treating…
This Halloween, something didn’t seem quite right. There was a sense of mischief in the air that was to be expected, but this year it was accompanied by a sinister undertone that the Smith family couldn’t quite put their fingers on.
The evening went off without a hitch. Little zombies, ninjas, and ghosts came to the door for miniature chocolate bars and went on their way.
It wasn’t until Mr. and Mrs. Smith were tucked into bed and drifting off to dreamland that things began to stir.
“What’s that?” Mr. Smith shot up in bed. “I swear I heard something in the yard.”
Mrs. Smith grumbled groggily but remembering how uneasy they had felt all night, she got out of bed and put on her glasses. “I’ll have a look.”
She tip-toed down the stairs and pulled back a sliver of the patio curtain to have a look in the backyard.
The colour drained from Mrs. Smith’s face as she stared in horror out the window. Through the shadows, two glowing eyes stared back at her.
As her eyes adjusted to the blackness, a silhouette began to form around the eyes: long, sharp horns twisted toward the sky, a hump, and a lithe neck below.
Just as quickly as it had appeared, the figure ran through the yard over the Smith’s pool and leaped over the fence.
“What was that?” Mr. Smith asked in a whisper from where he had appeared behind Mrs. Smith.
“I think…I…” she stammered. “I think it was a deer!”
The Smiths crawled back into bed, grateful for their new automatic pool cover installation. They didn’t even want to think about what would have happened had the deer dashed into the pool with their previous mesh cover, or even worse — some youths running around on the most mischievous night of the year.
The takeaway:
An automatic pool cover ensures your pool is full of sweet dreams, not nightmares. Pool Patrol’s pool cover fabric is high-tensile and durable, and when properly installed and maintained, it can hold a ton of weight — almost literally. We've seen bears, deer, and golf carts safely cross our pool covers.
That strength is the number one benefit of an automatic pool cover because it also means safety—safety for your family, your guests, and any little witches or Pokemon that might find their way into your backyard.
