Automatic pool cover fabric replacement is one of the most common calls Pool Patrol gets every spring. Homeowners across the Okanagan, the Lower Mainland, and Vancouver Island are opening their pools after winter and noticing something's off.

We hear it all the time:

“My pool cover looks worn.” Fading, discolouration, or visible weak spots are signs of UV, chlorine, or salt damage. The fabric's breaking down.

“There’s water on top of my pool cover.” Self explanatory. Tears, rips, and holes let the water through. Time to replace.

“The cover sounds different when it runs.” Healthy vinyl is flexible and quiet. If yours is stiff, brittle, or making a crunching sound, that's the material telling you something.

“It keeps getting caught in the tracks.” Bunching, sagging, or fraying webbing causes the cover to snag as it moves. A cover that's working properly lies flat on the water.

“It's more than seven years old.” Deterioration isn't always visible without a trained eye. Pool cover fabric lasts roughly seven to nine years. If yours is older, call Pool Patrol, and we'll tell you honestly where things stand.

What You Need to Know (Key Points)

  • Pool cover fabric lasts seven to nine years. After that, it can't do its job safely, no matter how it looks on the surface.

  • Don’t patch it. A worn cover is like bald tires. Patching one spot doesn't fix what's happening everywhere else, and it will fail at the worst possible time.

  • A worn fabric stresses the whole system. As the vinyl breaks down, it drags on the tracks and puts an uneven load on the motor and pulleys. What starts as a fabric problem can become a bigger repair bill.

  • Pool Patrol can diagnose over the phone. Call us during regular business hours, Monday to Friday. We’ll answer! If we can't solve it over the phone, we'll come to you.

  • We service any brand. You don't need a Pool Patrol cover to call us.

We service both automatic covers and manual covers.

Why It's Worth Replacing on Time: Safety and Component Maintenance

A properly installed Pool Patrol automatic cover system with new fabric can hold the weight of a golf cart. Pool Patrol has seen healthy covers hold bears. That's real protection for kids, pets, and anyone near an unattended pool.

When the fabric's compromised, so is that load-bearing capacity. Hidden holes and weak zones don't always show from across the yard.

Beyond safety, there are practical reasons not to wait:

  • If your cover completely fails, you will need to wait a few weeks before getting a replacement installed.

  • Worn fabric drags on the tracks

  • Worn fabric puts uneven stress on the motor and pulleys

  • What starts as neglected fabric replacement can quietly become a bigger repair bill

Pool Patrol can hop on the phone during regular business hours with you to chat about the state of your pool cover.

Can you Patch Worn Pool Cover Fabric?

No. Full stop.

"Patching your worn-out pool cover is like patching bald tires and then driving around all winter. You're going to have a bad time. It's going to fail catastrophically at the worst possible time, and it's going to stress out the rest of the system and compromise safety."
— Allan Horwood, Owner, Pool Patrol

The fabric breaks down throughout, not just at the visible damage point. Patching one spot doesn't fix what's happening everywhere else, and it won't stop the webbing from catching on the tracks, either.

What worn pool cover fabric actually looks like up close. UV damage, chemical wear, and age cause the vinyl to fade, stiffen, and crack, often before the cover stops working entirely.

Pool Patrol Replaces Fabric from Other Brands

Pool Patrol services pool covers from any manufacturer, whether manual or automatic. Every spring, a lot of the calls come from homeowners with a competitor's system. If you're not sure who installed your cover or what brand it is, that's fine. Give us a call, we can still help.

Replacement fabrics are customized for each pool, and you can choose from eight standard colours. The most popular choices are charcoal grey and navy blue. Manufacturing takes about three weeks after measurement (we are always working to speed up this process), and installation takes about half a day. A full tune-up covering pulleys, gliders, and guides is included.

"We have someone to answer your call Monday to Friday. We help diagnose problems over the phone and with photos. If we can't solve it over the phone, we can do a site visit. We will call you back."
