Replacement Pool Cover: Is It the Fabric or the System?

A replacement pool cover is what you need once the fabric, hardware, or track on your automatic cover can't hold up safely anymore. Pool Patrol sees plenty of covers where the fabric checks out fine, but the system underneath is done for. Here's how our crew tells the difference, and what it costs you if a mechanical failure gets missed.

Quick answer: A replacement pool cover isn't always a fabric problem. If the fabric looks fine but the cover binds, drags, or strains the motor, the track, motor, or pulleys have worn out, and that's a system replacement (not a fabric swap). Pool Patrol checks both before recommending either.

• A motor that strains or runs louder than it used to

What a Failing Cover System Costs You

A failing system costs more than the price of new fabric. A cover that won't close right lets debris and sun into the water, which strains your pump and filter and shortens their life. A cover that's stuck open all winter costs you in heat loss and chemical use.

A failing system also costs you safety. Automatic pool safety covers are load-tested to ASTM F1346, and a worn system can fail that test well before the fabric looks bad enough to notice. The CPSC tracks pool safety cover standards through ASTM's voluntary standards committee, a standard that’s built around the whole mechanism.
